U-Drive’s Carbon Neutral Status for Scopes 1 & 2

At U-Drive, we are proud to be working with Carbon Footprint Ltd to achieve carbon neutral status for Scopes 1 & 2 for a fourth consecutive year. Since 2021, we have reduced our real total market-based carbon emissions by 38.78%. This increases to 53.53% when we factor in the 1,757 tonnes of carbon offset as we work towards our sustainability goals.

Our fleet of electric vehicles is bigger than ever. However, commercial vehicles are still mostly fuel-based, and so we have been looking at positive ways to offset our carbon emissions as a business.

Every year, we work with Carbon Footprint Ltd to assess our company's carbon footprint and achieve a carbon neutral status by offsetting certain carbon emissions. We do this by supporting some incredible projects around the world that enhance developing communities and help reduce global carbon emissions.

In previous years, we have helped to fund projects in India, Brazil, Cambodia & Turkey covering solar and renewable energy to massively reduce carbon emissions and deforestation, whilst supporting the local communities where they are based.

This year, we have chosen to support three new projects that have been verified by Verra and Gold Standard:

Brascarbon Methane Recovery Project BCA-BRA-16

To offset Scope 1 of our carbon emissions, we support the Brascarbon Methane Recovery Project (BCA-BRA-16) in Brazil. This project captures methane generated from animal waste at agricultural facilities and converts it into biogas using covered anaerobic digesters. By preventing methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than carbon dioxide, from being released into the atmosphere, the project significantly reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to delivering climate benefits, the project improves waste management practices and reduces local environmental impacts such as odour, water contamination, and air pollution. The captured methane can also be used as a renewable energy source, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels while supporting more sustainable agricultural operations.

Through verified carbon offsets from this project, we have offset 187 tCO₂e, contributing to meaningful climate action while supporting sustainable environmental practices in Brazil.

Promoting Improved Cooking Practices in Nigeria

To offset Scope 2 of our carbon emissions, we support the Promoting Improved Cooking Practices in Nigeria project, a carbon offset initiative certified under the Gold Standard. This project distributes improved, energy-efficient cookstoves to households across Nigeria, helping families replace traditional open-fire cooking methods that rely heavily on wood and charcoal.

By introducing cleaner and more efficient cookstoves, the project significantly reduces fuel consumption and lowers greenhouse gas emissions associated with deforestation and inefficient combustion. The improved stoves also help decrease indoor air pollution, creating healthier living conditions for families and communities.

In addition to its climate benefits, the initiative supports sustainable development by reducing pressure on local forests, improving household energy efficiency, and enhancing quality of life for participating communities.

Through this project, we have offset 96 tCO₂e, contributing to global climate action while supporting cleaner, more sustainable cooking solutions in Nigeria.

Wind Park Vader Piet Aruba

To offset Scope 3 emissions from employee commuting, we support the Wind Park Vader Piet project in Aruba, a renewable energy initiative certified under the Gold Standard. The project generates clean electricity through wind power, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based energy generation on the island.

By harnessing Aruba’s strong and consistent trade winds, the wind park produces renewable electricity that is fed directly into the local grid. This helps displace energy that would otherwise be generated using fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.

In addition to delivering important climate benefits, the project contributes to Aruba’s long-term energy sustainability and helps strengthen the island’s renewable energy capacity.

Through this project, we have offset 180 tCO₂e, helping to address emissions associated with employee commuting while supporting renewable wind energy development.

Carbon Neutrality Certification

Further to our funding towards these three verified projects, U-Drive is now certified as carbon neutral from Scopes 1 and 2, as well as emissions that relate to U-Drive employee commuting.

We are continually looking at ways that we can improve our sustainability and becoming carbon neutral is an exciting step towards those goals. There will be more to come!

Freedom Flight Sponsor

As part of our #sustainability goals and recent #carbonneutralstatus, we are also a prize sponsor for the Freedom Flight carbonfootprint.com challenge! In order to accelerate the development of zero carbon aviation, a challenge has been set to fly a zero-carbon emission 100+ seat passenger aircraft between London and New York and complete the return trip within 24 hours of starting out.

The first to complete the Freedom Flight will earn a place in aviation history. The winning team will also take the Prize Fund, anticipated to be in £millions by the time the challenge is met!
